Best Age to Learn Swimming - Find Out More

According to studies, one of the common causes of injury and death among both children and adults is drowning. Worse, about 80% in the statistics are children ranging from 1-5 years old down. According to reports, pre-schoolers and toddlers tend to drown in private or public swimming pools. Babies, on the other hand, drown in bath tubs. This is primarily because at toddlers and kids are more active at this age range, yet still unable to determine danger and hazards.

When is the Best Age to Learn Swimming?
In general, experts say that 5 years old is the best age to learn swimming. This is because at 5, a child already has the adequate physical and mental development to understand what is taught during swimming lessons, thus making progress easier.

However, it doesn’t hurt to expose children under 5 years old to water. It is possible in at this age for a toddler to get structured lessons, giving them a chance to get comfortable in the water, floating with their legs, arms and putting their face in. This is also the perfect opportunity for parent and child bonding session.

Swimming Tips for Kids
If you are a parent enrolling your kid for a swimming lesson, you can use the tips below as your guide:

· If this is your first lesson, it will be helpful to arrive early. This will give your child a chance to have a quick dip in the pool before the start of his swimming lesson. Doing so will also give him an opportunity to become acquainted with his new environment, which will greatly help eliminate all his anxieties.

· As much as possible, develop a positive attitude. Your confidence will transfer itself to your child.

· If your child is not yet toilet trained, this is not a problem. For this specific purpose, there diapers especially designed for the water.

· As much as you can, get involved in the activity. This includes getting into the swimming pool with your kid. Children and toddlers need all the support they could get when it comes to new activities. Having you as close as possible will be the best reassurance they could possibly get.

· Inform the swimming instructor if there is a particular activity that worries you, like dunking your kid underwater. Know that you will not be forced to do anything against your will, especially something that concerns your child.

· Always support your kid with every new activity he wants to try, like ducking underwater, kicking and bubble blowing to name a few. It will definitely boost his confidence when he has you cheering on.

Before enrolling to kids swimming lessons, there are important things that you need to put into consideration. Make sure that the instructors handling the lessons are qualified and certified. The school itself should have proper certification to prove that they are qualified to teach swimming. And of course, go for an instructor and swimming institution with good reputation.

Whether your child gets informal or structured swimming lessons, consistency is the key to getting progress. This means, a child must regularly be in the water in order to learn how to be really comfortable in it. For additional information on the best age to learn swimming - find out more.
